Our Tailored ATEX Solutions: Temporary ATEX Pumping at a Crude Oil Terminal
In a recent application at a European tank terminal, crude oil needed to be transferred urgently to a refinery while the customer’s main high-pressure pump was under maintenance. The site was fully ATEX-classified, requiring certified temporary equipment.
United Rentals supplied a custom configuration of four 6” electric ATEX-certified pumps:
2 x 2 setup: Two pumps in series delivered the required 4 bar pre-pressure.
Parallel configuration: Achieved a total flow of 400 m³/hr.
All connections: Used certified hoses, pipes, and fittings.
This solution enabled safe crude oil transfer at high capacity while allowing uninterrupted maintenance work. By avoiding vacuum truck extraction, the client reduced costs, downtime, and manual handling risks. With ATEX pumps in place, the crude could be sent directly for refining.

What is ATEX?
ATEX (ATmosphères EXplosibles) refers to the EU directives that regulate equipment and protective systems for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. ATEX defines hazardous areas in zones based on the frequency and duration of explosive atmospheres:
- Zone 0: Continuous explosive atmosphere
- Zone 1: Occasional explosive atmosphere
- Zone 2: Rare/short-term explosive atmosphere
