How To Choose the Right Ground Protection Mats

Load Weight & Equipment Type

  • Select your ground protection mats for the heaviest equipment you'll support, accounting for tracked, wheeled, or point-loaded forces from outriggers
  • For extreme heavy loads from equipment like large excavators or cranes, robust engineered mats such as cross-laminated timber (CLT) provide superior weight distribution and ground protection. Alternatively, durable composite mats are often ideal for lighter wheeled vehicles or pedestrian access

Underlying Ground Condition & Environmental Protection Needs

  • Assess the ground you're protecting, including soil softness, drainage, existing slope, and how sensitive the surface is
  • For soft, sensitive ground where load spreading and rut prevention are key, choose composite matting. For extremely soft or uneven terrain supporting the heaviest equipment, robust timber or engineered wood mats offer superior stability
  • Consider any specific environmental regulations or permits required for your site. Select mats designed to prevent soil contamination, minimize disturbance to vegetation, and protect against the spread of invasive species

Coverage Area & Duration

  • Calculate the total square footage required for temporary roads, work pads, and staging areas, then factor in a buffer for operational flexibility or unforeseen site adjustments
  • Estimate the project duration and expected traffic volume. For extended periods or heavy use, prioritize durable mat types, like advanced composites or robust timber mats, that resist wear and environmental degradation

FAQs
Will timber mats or composite mats work better for my project?

The specific needs and priorities of your project can help you determine which type of mat will work best for you. Composite mats have a higher load-bearing capacity and a longer lifespan than timber mats. Composite mats are also more durable in harsh weather conditions, as they are resistant to water, chemicals and UV radiation. However, timber mats work better on soft or uneven terrains. They are also more environmentally friendly because they are biodegradable and recyclable. Timber mats are typically more cost-effective than composite mats.

How long do ground protection mats last?

The lifespan of ground protection mats varies depending on the type of mat, the frequency and intensity of use and worksite conditions. Composite mats can be used for up to ten years if they are well-maintained. Timber mats can be used for up to three years if they are well-maintained. Timber mats are susceptible to damage from dry rot, decay and insects, which lowers their lifespan.

How do I determine the right size and quantity of mats needed for my project?

The size and quantity of mats you need depends on the type of terrain, the weight and type of equipment used and the duration of the project. Consult with one of our United Rentals representatives to determine the right size and quantity of mats for your project.
