How To Choose the Right Power Generation Equipment

Total Power Requirements

  • Add up the wattage or amps for everything you need to run, including starting loads, and translate that into kW or kVA requirements
  • Confirm the voltage and phase needed on site so the power generation equipment rental matches your distribution equipment and avoids compatibility issues
  • Add up all connected loads and include start-up surges to avoid undersizing and nuisanced shutdowns

Run Time, Fuel Source & Fuel Storage

  • Decide how long you need continuous power and whether refueling is compatible with your site and schedule
  • Choose the right fuel type and storage solution to reduce interruptions and help you stay compliant with safety and environmental requirements
  • Develop a fuel strategy that fits run time and refueling logistics, especially for remote or 24/7 operation

Load Type, Distribution Needs & Site Conditions

  • Ensure proper site conditions for your power generation equipment, such as level concrete foundations, adequate ventilation and weatherproof protection
  • If you’re between options, choose a temporary power rental that provides a little headroom for real-world conditions and productivity
  • Determine everything the emergency power rental must handle, including people, tools, materials and attachments, so you stay within rated capacity and avoid damage

FAQs
What is a UPS backup?

A UPS, or uninterruptible power system, provides backup power when your regular power source fails or voltage drops to an unacceptable level. A UPS is like a backup battery, designed for the safe, orderly shutdown of a computer and connected equipment.

How do I test electrical equipment?

For each type of electrical equipment, there is a different tool to test if everything is working. Multimeters, or VOMs, are portable handheld electrical testing devices that survey a range of measurements for industrial and household electronics. Load banks are used to test power generation equipment to ensure proper functionality.

How do I calculate how much backup power I need?

To accurately calculate backup power, calculate average power consumption, critical loads and backup duration first. Calculate average power consumption by multiplying the power in kilowatts by the hours of use per day, week or month. To calculate critical loads, add the power consumption of all critical loads that require backup power and multiply the sum by the number of hours you need the backup power to last. To calculate backup time, consider battery age, type and temperature. Use the following formula for a rough estimate: battery time equals battery capacity divided by discharge rate. Once those numbers are calculated, backup power can be found by adding up the power consumption of all critical loads that require backup power and multiplying this by the number of hours you need the backup power to last.
